Club 3/21 and Parent Support Group plans for 2022
We are planning to restart the Club 3/21 for teens and adults with Down syndrome. With the pandemic still an issue, we are looking to host outdoor events only until further notice. For example, the first event we want to host in January would be a visit to the Phoenix zoo. In February, we are considering a visit to Desert Botanical Garden. And for March, we are considering a get-together around the Gilbert Water Tower for DS Awareness Day.
Also – for parents, we are looking to combine the Mom’s Night Out and Dad’s group into one Parents Walking Club.
Each month, we will have a new leader who will host parents to walk for 30 minutes as a group at a local park. Before each walk, participants will introduce themselves and then they will start on their journey together. It’s a great way to meet parents, get some exercise, and stay healthy and safe in 2022.
From Gina Johnson, Executive Director & Founder
Dearest Proud Parents:
I want to welcome and introduce a new advisory board member: Nick Kowalski.
I met Nick Kowalski in 2015 in the most memorable way. I was representing Sharing at an exhibitor table at Sprouts. Most everyone was so very nice, but one man came over to me acting obnoxious. I was taken off guard by how he was making a scene – I didn’t know how to handle him, so I just kept talking about what our organization does for families.
In a loud voice he then said, “If a mother knows she’s going to have a baby with Down syndrome, SHE SHOULD ABORT IT!”
I was so shaken and then Nick – a total stranger – put his arm around me and said, “Don’t listen to him. We call kids with Down syndrome our “Homies with an Extra Chromie!”
Ever since then, Nick and his wife Marie and daughters, Emma and Ani, have been active with our organization and in my life. We are so blessed to have Nick Kowalski (and his family) in our Sharing family.
I have written a special note to all my Proud Parents. To read it, please click here.
Love,
David’s Mom
